In speech last night cGovern downs Radical Right

George Mc<;overn, former senator from South Dakota, spoke last night in the Library Auditorium on "Const:rvatism in America," denouncing the Radical Right as distorting American political ideals. The main point of McGovern's speech was that the right-wing radical groups, which have gained a great dell of political intlucncc in recent years, have too much intluenn· in American politics. McGovcrn was defeated for rcclection in 1980 for the scnatorial scat which he had held f(>r the past 18 years. One of the factors in that defeat was the "Targct McGovern" campaign waged against him by the Na-. tiona! Conservative Political Action Committee ( NCPAC), a right-wing activist group. Hc was angry at the lack of substance of their attacks on him. "Emotional attacks can be so distorted and incendiary that you can't discuss the real issues," he said.
